VISIONS Lab
VISIONS Lab develops and adapts technology products for the visually impaired. The VISIONS Lab (Visually Impaired Students Initiative on Science) was organized to assist students at Purdue University with their study of science. The Lab’s research focused on the development of an inexpensive and more versatile Braille keyboard and haptic (tactile) display. The Lab also developed a software program capable of translating chemical equations and chemistry symbols into a standard six-dot Braille code, and software that translates Braille documents into standard English text. |

VISIONS Lab wanted to take their inventions, tools, and services to the next level, requiring additional funds and facilities in which to work.

Gateways provided business consulting services including assessment of the viability of the potential of the spin-off company, and validation of the commercial potential of the keyboard technology. An industry partner was also needed to help relieve some of the development costs.

Gateways identified an industry partner for VISIONS Lab which provided funding assistance and guidance in product development. Gateways also helped VISIONS Lab relocate to Purdue’s business incubator facility. The VISIONS Lab project resulted in the formation of a spin-off business venture called “gh Braille.” Tactile diagrams created using the process developed by VISIONS Lab are now available by subscription through the TAEVIS Online website at Purdue. |
